About the institution

Tallinn University (TLU) is a public research university in Estonia promoting an intelligent lifestyle through education, research, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. TLU’s mission is to support Estonia’s sustainable development through high-quality research, studies, creative work, public dialogue, entrepreneurship, and cooperation with public and third-sector partners.

Academic work is organised around five focus fields: educational innovation; digital and media culture; cultural competences; healthy and sustainable lifestyle; and society and open governance.

TLU offers BA, MA and PhD programmes, teacher education, and extensive continuing education, working closely with schools, municipalities, ministries, cultural institutions and NGOs to strengthen learning, teaching and leadership. The university enrolled 7,237 degree students across 111 curricula, including 33 English-taught programmes as of 1 November 2025. Research-informed innovation and strong international cooperation, including 400+ Erasmus+ agreements, support piloting and scaling of evidence-based solutions.

For HUMAN-AI, TLU provides modern facilities, reliable internet access and essential ICT resources such as an e-learning platform, ICT labs and videoconferencing systems. TLU can host conferences and workshops, offer bibliographic materials and ensure excellent accommodation options.


Team

Prof. Sirje Virkus — Coordinator at Tallinn University

Professor of Information Science and Head of the Study Area of Information Sciences at Tallinn University’s School of Digital Technologies. She earned her PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University and has worked at Tallinn University since 1985. Her research focuses on data, information, digital and media literacy and emerging technologies in education and memory institutions. She has over 250 publications, serves on journal editorial boards, and received the Order of the White Star (4th Class) of the Estonian President in 2021 for her contribution to the development of information sciences in Estonia.

Marianne Paimre, PhD

Estonian media and information researcher at Tallinn University. Her work focuses on media representations of social issues and digital health information behaviour, particularly among older adults. She received her PhD in journalism from the University of Jyväskylä in 2013, studying drug discourse in the Estonian press. Her scholarship contributes to understanding how media narratives and digital information environments shape social issues, public health behaviour, and policy discussions in contemporary society.
